Cooling Tower Dispersants
Fouling caused by settleable solids can be effectively
controlled using dispersants. Dispersants can either be organic compounds or
synthetic polymers. Unfortunately, organic compounds typically require large
concentrations to be effective. Therefore, the most commonly used dispersants
are synthetic polymers.
Synthetic polymers come in various types, typically
depending on the type of fouling being targeted.
- Low molecular weight anionic polymers are the
most commonly used synthetic dispersants.
- Cationic amines and quarternary amines are also
used to control biological fouling.
- Nonionic polyacrylamides are used to disperse
silt and clay.
