In a
recent blog post, Dennis explored the potential benefits of predictive water management, highlighting the significant savings—up to 40%—that can be achieved by implementing such strategies, along with the notable improvements in operational efficiencies. At Watertech, we have focused on leveraging Aquassist to develop a comprehensive predictive water treatment program. Some key benefits of Aquassist include:
- Supporting operators in their daily water treatment tasks.
- Generating sustainable savings in time, energy, and maintenance.
- Proactive prediction with customized graphics interpretation and accelerated problem detection.
- Boosting operational efficiency and productivity, saving time and streamlining processes.
- Calculating environmental savings, such as reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.
Supporting Operators in their Daily Water Treatment
Over the 45 years Watertech has been in business, innovation in water testing has been limited. Yes, we now have handheld meters that aid in our water testing, but titrations are still run with a casserole dish, relying on operators to precisely and accurately monitor for color changes, read miniscule increments on burettes, and perform calculations to determine precise chemical levels. Aquassist completely eliminates the potential for human error – once our samples are prepared, the portable titration analyzer completely runs the test, instantaneously uploading the data to the Aquassist cloud-based software. Operators, managers and Watertech representatives can have confidence the testing is being done and is being performed accurately. As new tests emerge, updating the software rather than purchasing new meters ensures that the system stays up-to-date and cost-effective. With equipment that can be trusted to provide precise analysis, the water treatment rep can then work directly with plant personnel if chemistry falls out of range, requiring preventative maintenance.
Generating Sustainable Savings in Time, Energy, and Maintenance
Aquassist customers have reported up to a 40% reduction in water testing time. This time savings allows operators to focus on other critical tasks, such as predictive maintenance in other areas of the plant. Additionally, when combined with Watertech’s other chemical technologies such as Aquafilm® for boiler water treatment, natural gas usage has been reduced by up to 10%.
Proactive Prediction with Customized Graphics Interpretation and Accelerated Problem Detection
Aquassist’s predictive capabilities are enhanced by custom graphics that interpret data in real time. The graph below illustrates how PTSA, a fluorescent tracer used to monitor cooling water inhibitor levels, quickly declines due to an upset scenario caused by the feed of a non-oxidizing biocide. However, with our new TAG polymer inhibitor formula, we can see that even as PTSA levels dip, the active TAG polymer remains stable.
This graph shows the PTSA quickly deteriorating due to a system upset, while the TAG Polymer is holding study. No alarm is triggered because the system anticipates the non-oxidizing biocide feed.
For example, if a slug of hardness were introduced into the system, we would observe a corresponding drop in TAG polymer levels, triggering an alarm. With predictive analysis, the system recognizes that PTSA levels naturally dip on scheduled non-oxidizing biocide feed dates. Traditionally, this would trigger an unnecessary alarm, but because this pattern is now expected, no follow-up action is needed. Conversely, a drop in TAG polymer levels could indicate a potential scaling issue in the condenser water, which would require preventative maintenance to avoid system inefficiencies or damage.
Boosting Operational Efficiency and Productivity, Saving Time and Streamlining Processes
As mentioned previously, an Aquassist based water treatment testing program can save up to 40% of testing time from on-site personnel. The system dashboard updates sensor data in real time, allowing operators and management to log in, verify that results are within range, confirm sensors are free from fouling, and ensure chemical levels are sufficient. This streamlined process provides peace of mind, knowing that water systems are operating at peak efficiency.
